Secobra UK Hosts First Spring Barley Open Day in Norfolk
In late July 2025, the Secobra UK team was delighted to welcome seed distributors, malting barley growers, agronomists, maltsters and industry professionals to our spring barley open day in Norfolk.
The event provided a valuable opportunity to walk the plots and take a close look at both established and upcoming varieties in our UK spring barley portfolio. Key varieties such as Belter and Ptarmigan were on display, alongside a pipeline of promising new material still in trial, demonstrating strong early potential for both growers and the wider supply chain.
Tom Barker, UK Commercial Manager, who organised the day, commented:
“Secobra has been working with malting barley since 1902, but it’s these conversations in the field that still shape what we do next.”
Field days like this are more than just a showcase, they’re a chance to listen. Understanding the challenges and opportunities from every stage of the supply chain is what drives our breeding work. Whether it’s feedback from growers, agronomists, merchants or maltsters, that mix of perspectives is core to how we operate.
With shareholders that include major industry players across malting and brewing, Secobra remains focused on delivering varieties that are agronomically robust, commercially relevant, and aligned with what the market needs, today and tomorrow.
A big thank you to everyone who joined us (including Dominique Vequaud, France and Dr. Wolfhard Schmidt, Germany, walked the plots, asked great questions and contributed to the discussion. And of course, to Rolfes of Walsham for the much-appreciated BBQ.
