Long-Serving Barley Breeder Jo Campion Retires After 30-Year Career
After more than three decades in UK plant breeding, respected barley breeder Jo Campion will retire this summer, marking the close of an exceptional career that has made a lasting impact on spring barley in the UK.
Jo has been part of Secobra UK since it began in 2017, working as our Assistant Barley Breeder. Her skill, precision and commitment have been key in developing new spring barley varieties for the UK market.
She has worked alongside barley breeder Paul Bury for over 30 years, introducing new genetics, improving disease resistance, and delivering high-yielding varieties valued by UK farmers and maltsters alike.
“Jo’s determination, technical ability and attention to detail have set a really high standard within our breeding programme,” said Paul Bury. “Her work has strengthened UK spring barley and her influence will be felt for many years to come.”
Known for her hard-working approach and willingness to help others, Jo has earned the respect of colleagues and industry peers throughout her career.
She now plans to spend more time with her family and focus on her garden, applying the same care there as she has to every trial plot over the years.
“Jo leaves behind a legacy in every plot and cross we grow,” added Paul Bury. “We wish her a happy and well-earned retirement.”
